Alberta pursues energy storage solutions to integrate renewables

Energy and Environment Solutions (AI-EES) is providing C$2 million grant for Alberta to develop next-generation energy storage technologies.

AI-EES is in search of technology providers with innovative ideas for energy storage to enable the deployment of wind and solar power in the Canadian province.

The group has already issued a call for proposals. AI-EES will fund up to C$250,000 for each approved project with up to C$2 million of funds committed.

Alberta can meet its climate change goals through renewable energy developments.

By 2030, AI-EES plans to achieve 20 percent of the electrical generation from renewable sources, with 2.5 percent energy storage capacity to be achieved of total electrical generation.

The province of Alberta has strong wind and solar energy potential, but electricity needs to be available when the light switches go on, not just when the wind is blowing and the sun is shining, says Mark Summers, director, renewable energy, AI-EES.

Energy storage technologies will assist in making widespread use of those resources, says Summers.
