Today’s renewable energy news includes announcements on TotalEnergies signing deal with Low Carbon, Avangrid’s solar project in Ohio, Alterra, among others.
TotalEnergies Acquires 435 MW UK Solar and Battery Portfolio from Low Carbon
TotalEnergies has acquired a 435 MW portfolio of eight solar farms and two battery energy storage systems in the UK from renewable investor Low Carbon. The projects, at advanced development stages, are expected to become operational by 2028, generating approximately 350 GWh of clean electricity annually — enough to power around 100,000 UK homes. While financial terms were not disclosed, this acquisition aligns with TotalEnergies’ strategy to expand its renewable energy footprint. Low Carbon continues its commitment to renewable energy, planning to commence construction on an additional 400 MW of solar and battery projects within the next 18 months.
Avangrid’s 150 MW Powell Creek Solar Project Now Operational in Ohio
Avangrid has commenced operations at its 150 MWac (202 MWdc) Powell Creek Solar Project in Putnam County, Ohio. The facility, comprising over 300,000 solar panels, is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 30,000 homes annually. During construction, the project created around 500 jobs, primarily filled by local union workers. Over its lifetime, Powell Creek is projected to contribute over $31 million in tax revenue to local jurisdictions and provide about $1.1 million annually in lease payments to landowners. This marks Avangrid’s second energy project in Ohio, following the 304 MW Blue Creek wind farm established in 2012.
Heliene Opens 500 MW Solar Module Facility in Minnesota
Canadian solar manufacturer Heliene has inaugurated a new 500 MW solar module assembly plant in Rogers, Minnesota, known as Minnesota Line 3. Operational since April 29, 2025, this facility increases Heliene’s total U.S. manufacturing capacity to 1.3 GW, complementing its existing lines in Mountain Iron. The Rogers plant is expected to create over 220 jobs and received $2.3 million in state funding to support its development . Heliene emphasizes domestic content by partnering with U.S. suppliers for components like steel frames and solar cells, aligning with federal incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act.
UAE’s Alterra Commits €50 Million to 1.4 GW Solar and Battery Projects in Italy
Alterra, a UAE-based investment platform, has pledged €50 million to develop a 1.4 GW portfolio of solar and battery energy storage systems (BESS) across Italy. This initiative aims to enhance Italy’s renewable energy capacity and grid stability, aligning with the country’s goal of achieving 80 percent renewable electricity by 2030. The investment will support projects that integrate solar power generation with advanced battery storage solutions, facilitating a more resilient and sustainable energy infrastructure. Alterra’s commitment underscores the growing international interest in Italy’s renewable energy sector and its potential for significant growth.
