Today’s renewable energy news includes announcements on RWE, EnBW, Botley West Solar Farm, Vestas, Masdar, among others.
RWE Builds 86 MWp Solar Parks Along German Motorway
RWE is developing an 86 megawatt-peak (MWp) solar park alongside a German motorway, optimizing unused roadside land to generate clean energy. This project supports Germany’s renewable energy targets and is part of RWE’s plan to expand its solar capacity. The solar installation will power thousands of homes and reflects a broader national strategy to utilize highway-adjacent land for solar power. A federal report identified up to 48 gigawatts of solar potential along highways. Recent regulation changes now allow solar projects within 40 meters of roads, easing development across the country.
EnBW Powers Up Germany’s Largest Solar Cluster
EnBW has commissioned a major solar cluster in Brandenburg, Germany, centered around the Weesaw-Wilmersdorf Solar Park. With an installed capacity of 187MW across 164 hectares and 465,000 modules, it is Germany’s largest solar facility. The park produces approximately 187 GWh annually—enough to power 50,000 homes — and avoids 129,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year. Notably, it is Germany’s first large-scale solar project built without subsidies. EnBW plans to include battery storage, like at its 4MW Bruchsal site, to enhance grid stability and efficiency across all future solar projects.
UK’s Largest Solar Farm Moves Forward
The 840MW Botley West Solar Farm in Oxfordshire has entered the pre-examination phase with the UK Planning Inspectorate. Developed by Photovolt Development Partners, it could become the UK’s largest solar farm, covering 1,300 hectares and powering about 330,000 homes. The £800 million project also promises a 70 percent boost in biodiversity and plans to reduce local flood risks. A decision on approval is expected in early 2026, with construction likely to start mid-2026. The farm aims to connect to the grid by autumn 2027, supporting the UK’s push for more clean energy.
Vestas Secures 84 MW Wind Turbine Orders in Germany
Vestas has received two significant wind turbine orders in Germany, totaling 84 MW. The first order is for the Breunsdorf project in Saxony, where Vestas will supply 15 V162-6.2 MW turbines. The second order is for the Windpark Reinhardswald project in Hesse, involving 18 V150-6.0 MW turbines. Both projects include 20-year Active Output Management 5000 (AOM 5000) service agreements. Delivery for Breunsdorf is set to begin in Q2 2026, with commissioning in Q1 2027. For Windpark Reinhardswald, delivery starts in Q2 2025, and commissioning is scheduled for Q4 2026.
Masdar Plans 500 MW Baseload Green Power Project in Kazakhstan
Masdar, the UAE’s clean energy leader, is advancing a 500 MW wind power project in Kazakhstan’s Jambyl region, marking its inaugural venture in the country. This initiative is part of a broader 1 GW wind farm development aimed at supporting Kazakhstan’s renewable energy objectives. The project is a collaborative effort with W Solar, Qazaq Green Power, and the Kazakhstan Investment Development Fund. Expected to commence construction in Q1 2026, the wind farm will provide power to approximately 300,000 homes and contribute to Kazakhstan’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.
